Aurva

Aurva
A name given in Hindu myth to a great volcanic eruption of the past caused by the Rishi Aurva, who created from his thigh a great consuming fire which would have destroyed the world if Brahma had not assigned it to the ocean to a spot known as the ‘mare’s mouth’. The fact that this occurred in the sea shows that the story belongs either to the previous occupants of the Indian subcontinent or to the earliest times after the Hindus had arrived there.
